- Distincion
- Castilian keeps the theta sound for c before e or i, and for z, so cielo and zapato carry a th that no Latin American variety has. This one feature separates Castilian from all ten other Spanish accents on its own.
- Apical S
- The /s/ is produced further back with the tongue tip raised, giving it a slightly hissed quality distinct from the flatter Latin American s. It is subtle in isolation and obvious across a full paragraph.
- Velar J and G
- The j in jamon and the g in gente are a strong velar fricative, harsher than the softer h-like realisation common in the Caribbean. Requesting a gentle or breathy read can weaken it and pull the accent towards a neutral Latin American.
